Technology, Investing and Florida's Startup Ecosystem - by President Rhys Williams

Over the past two decades, Rhys L. Williams ’87 has been, variously or concurrently, a venture capitalist, biotechnology entrepreneur, angel group co-founder and leader, a technology incubator/accelerator program manager at the university level, and boardmember to numerous not-for-profit entities directly supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem.  He has prosecuted all of these roles while remaining a full-time resident of the great state of Florida, providing him a platform from which to view and help shape the development of its technology and early-stage investor communities.  He looks forward to sharing observations and vignettes from a colorful career that has centered on sourcing, analyzing, investing in, fostering, and gaining (losing) risk capital in “the next new thing.”  Prior to embarking on a career in technology development, management, and investing, Mr. Williams graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College.  He subsequently earned both JD and MBA degrees from the University of Florida six years apart.  He also served for 14 years in both reserve and active components of the U.S. Army and Florida Army National Guard, where he commanded a U.S. Army Special Forces combat diver detachment (“Green Beret”) and served overseas.  He speaks very good Spanish and not-so-good Portuguese. Rhys L. Williams is a 5th generation south Floridian who, along with his wife Dr. Lorna Williams, are busy surviving two teenage children (6th generation Floridians themselves).  Rhys has been a Boardmember of the Harvard Club of the Palm Beaches for several years and has had the privilege of serving as its president since April, 2016.  He is grateful for the opportunity to speak to fellow Harvard Club members as part of the Crimson Conversations speakers series.
