Dr. Donald B. Giddon

"The Differences in the Mind and Brain Between Creators and Observers of Visual Art and Other Esthetic Experiences"

What are some of the neurological, psychological, and behavioral differences between the brains of creators and observers of an esthetically pleasing experience? Why is the left side of the face more often displayed in portraits, religious, and other works of art than the right side, which is also consistent with the left side of the face being more responsive than the right side to negative emotions.

Professor Donald Giddon will discuss the scientific bases of these observations, including what we can learn from faces using the portraits and other works of Norman Rockwell and others. The formal title of his presentation is What neuropsychological differences are there in the mind and brain between creators and observers of esthetic experiences from visual art (using Norman Rockwell as an example), music,  dance, and plastic surgery

Dr. Giddon is a professor emeritus of Developmental Biology (Behavioral Medicine) in the Faculty of Medicine of Harvard University and at Brown University Medical School and psychological consultant at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Pain Center in Boston. Following an AB from Brown and MA in psychology from Boston University, he received a DMD from Harvard and PhD in psychology from Brandeis under the direction of Abraham Maslow. He is the author of many scientific publications including some on the anthropometric bases of perceived facial attractiveness.
