Crimson Crimes

In-laws and Outlaws - The Markel Murder

Hybrid Event
This event will be in-person and also broadcast on Zoom.

Dan Markel ('95, JD '01) was one of the brightest minds of his generation. A law professor at FSU and the father of two young sons, Markel got divorced in 2013, and was then brutally murdered at his home in 2014. It wasn't until 2016 that any arrests were made in the case, and as the details became public, it was revealed that Markel was a victim of a baroque murder-for-hire plot engineered by his in-laws to gain custody of his children. This past November, Markel's former brother-in-law Charlie Adelson was convicted of murder; and his former mother-in-law Donna was arrested while allegedly attempting to flee to Vietnam. Her case is ongoing.

Join journalist Miguel Sancho ('92), Palm Beach State Attorney Dave Aronberg ('93, JD 96), and Dan Markel's mother Ruth as they present a multi-media review of the case, discuss the various legal issues it engages, and honor the memory of this stellar Harvard grad.

About Crimson Crimes

Palm Beach State Attorney David Aronberg (AB '93, JD '96) and Emmy-award winning investigative reporter and executive producer Miguel Sancho (AB '92) will discuss headline-making crimes in which a Harvard alum was either a victim, an investigator, a litigator..... or the perpetrator! The speakers will focus on cases with a Palm Beach / Florida connection.

Each event will explore the key evidence, the lingering controversies, and latest developments in these epic cases. Expect special guests, lively Q&A sessions, and a fresh look at the crimes that continue to shock and fascinate the public.
