"Educated: A Memoir"
by
Tara Westover
This memoir reflects on a rural Idaho upbringing in a reclusive survivalist family with unique religious beliefs and practices loosely based on Mormon fundamentalism. It traces the author’s transition from having no formal education in elementary school and being indoctrinated into the culture and beliefs of her family, to attending and then graduating from Brigham Young and eventually getting a Phd in Intellectual History from Trinity College, Cambridge. The book has won many awards and was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, The New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, The Financial Times, The Guardian and the New York Public Library. In 2010 Ms. Westover was a fellow at Harvard and in 2019 she was the A.M. Rosenthal Writer-in-Residence at the Harvard Kennedy School Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics, and Public Policy.
Because we wish to keep the discussion intimate, and to allow all members to share their thoughts, this will only be open to members of the club until November 23rd. We will have a 20-person RSVP maximum. After the 23rd, if there is room, it will be open to all members of the Harvard community. While reading please consider a question or observation that you would like the group to discuss and bring it to the meeting!
