This historical novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks is based on the true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington. Drawing on the disciplines of art and science, the book skillfully jumps between mid-19 th century Kentucky, mid-20 th century New York, and the recent past in Washington, D.C. Along the way, Brooks examines slavery, racism, animal abuse, and injustice. Horse is a fast-paced narrative that pushes the reader to consider what has – and has not – changed in America.
